About Us

The Regional Primary Care Coalition (RPCC) is an active collaboration among existing and emerging coalitions of primary care providers serving the region’s low income residents and health philanthropies in Washington, D.C., Northern Virginia, and Suburban Maryland.

We are committed to reducing health disparities and advancing health equity in the region; improving the health status of the region’s residents; and fostering the creation of coordinated, patient-centered systems of community-based primary care that make excellent, affordable, linguistically and culturally appropriate health services available to all across the region.

Our Work

RPCC focuses on:

  • Identifying and sharing information on:
    • Evidence-based strategies for primary care, health services delivery, and population health, and
    • Promising practices that may help improve the quality of primary care in the region
  • Facilitating collaboration to maximize learning, ensure that no one is “reinventing the wheel”, leverage resources, and advance clinical practice;
  • Using our collective knowledge about local and regional primary care to inform local and regional public policy.

RPCC started in late 2001 as a series of conversations among the region’s primary care coalitions and funders to get a more in-depth understanding of regional health issues and persistent disparities associated with race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status. Over the years, the conversation has grown into a collaboration, allowing the group to work collaboratively to address these issues. In 2006, it completed its first strategic planning process and decided to become the Regional Primary Care Coalition.

Looking at population health and health care issues from regional perspectives is a critical component of the work of RPCC (Our Region) because:

  • Geographic boundaries are porous;
  • Residents often live in one jurisdiction and work and/or get health care in another;
  • The health of those living and/or working in one jurisdiction frequently affects the health of those in other jurisdictions.

Our Website

This website was launched on September 30, 2009. It is designed to provide information about primary care issues in our region and help us share what we are learning. Its goals are to:

  • Encourage and help people think regionally about health issues and systems of primary care especially for the for the uninsured and low income populations;
  • Provide information that communities can use to strengthen community based person centered primary care and advance health equity; and
  • Help health services providers, policy makers and advocates learn from experiences of safety net providers’ experiences and about innovative approaches to addressing health issues of low income and uninsured populations.

To that end, Our Region Section includes:

  • Some statistics on the demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of the region and its individual jurisdiction using information comes from the U.S. Census – the American Communities Survey 2005-2007 and the Small Area Health Insurance Estimates, 2006 and from the Kids Count Database supported by the Annie E. Casey Foundation; and
  • Links to research reports and data on the region and its jurisdictions (organized by jurisdiction and topic) about  a number of health related areas including community health status indicators, access to services, and health disparities and health equity that are indexed by jurisdiction and topic.

The other sections focus on four topics: Medical Homes, Health Information Technology, Health Equity, and Innovations. The content of these sections on launch is just a beginning. We will be adding and refining its information frequently over the next few months so please check back regularly. We also urge you to explore the websites of the RPCC’s core leadership to learn more about the work and priorities of each group.

    This web site is new and as with all websites, there may be some glitches. If you have trouble using the site or other suggestions, please email webmaster@regionalprimarycare.org
